Featuring: Kraig Kinchen, Executive Director
The Challenge
When Kraig Kinchen stepped into the role of Executive Director at 100 Black Men of Indianapolis two years ago, he quickly recognized a significant opportunity: A more structured fundraising plan was needed to enable the organization to receive financial support from a greater number of individual and family donors. To build long-term sustainability, Kraig sought expert guidance to strengthen fundraising capabilities and establish a solid foundation for growth.
Why Loring, Sternberg & Associates?
Kraig was introduced to Loring, Sternberg & Associates (LSA) through his pastor, who had worked with Dave Sternberg on another nonprofit initiative. After meaningful conversations with both LSA and another respected local agency, Kraig chose LSA for one reason: candor.
“LSA had a reputation for telling it like it is,” he said. “At the time, we didn’t need someone to tell us how wonderful we were—we needed a frank assessment of what it would take to move forward.”
The Approach
From the very beginning, LSA approached the engagement as true partners:
- Listening First: The team invested time to learn the heart of the organization through conversations and research.
- Practical Execution: Leading the charge, Annette Flickinger rolled up her sleeves and got things done—especially around improving and organizing the fundraising database.
- Strategic Guidance: By balancing strategy with action, LSA gave the organization both a plan and the tools to carry it out.
A “Wow” Moment
For Kraig, the turning point came when the LSA team reflected back the strength of 100 Black Men Indy’s story.
“They helped us understand how powerful our story really was—and that telling it well was the key to unlocking fundraising success,” Kraig said. “It gave us confidence that we could succeed.”
The Results
Today, fundraising at 100 Black Men Indy looks very different:
- A clear structure and process for donor engagement is in place.
- The team feels confident in their fundraising capabilities.
- Relationships are growing, and the organization is positioned for even greater long-term success.
“We’re now at the point where we feel like we have the knowledge and the structure in place to succeed.”
Final Thoughts + Impact
Kraig describes LSA as easy to work with, constructive in their feedback, and fully committed to the success of their clients.
“They’re willing to provide the important feedback you need to hear, but in a way that helps you move forward.”
With LSA’s guidance, 100 Black Men Indy has gone from lacking a well-developed fundraising plan to building a strong, sustainable foundation for donor engagement and organizational growth.
